Ultrasound

We offer a free ultrasound, which provides useful information about your pregnancy. During the ultrasound, the practitioner will confirm that the placenta is healthy and that the fetus is growing properly in the uterus. A fetus growing outside of the uterus can be a life threatening condition, so it’s imperative that you receive the ultrasound whether you are choosing to carry or terminate the pregnancy. Our licensed ultrasound technician will also determine the gestational age and your due date. If you need Medi-Cal , we can provide a pregnancy verification upon completing your ultrasound.

How should I prepare for an ultrasound?

There is no special preparation for the ultrasound test. It is recommended that you wear loose fitting clothes. You can bring a partner, friend or family member.

What happens during an ultrasound?

You may need to change into a hospital gown before lying comfortably on an examining table. During the test, a small amount of water-soluble gel is applied to the skin over your abdomen. The gel does not harm your skin or stain your clothes.

A small device, called a transducer, is gently applied against the skin of your abdomen. The sound waves or echoes that reflect back are received by the transducer and transformed into a picture on a screen. These pictures can be printed out. You may ask for a copy of the images at the end of the exam. The ultrasound test takes about 30 minutes to complete.

If I am choosing abortion, why receive an ultrasound?

  1. It will confirm that you are in fact pregnant. Since a pregnancy test only measures hormone levels, a positive pregnancy test sometimes indicates other health conditions besides pregnancy. A pregnancy test alone is not 100% conclusive of pregnancy. Before spending the $300-$950 or more for an abortion, get an ultrasound and make sure you are definitely pregnant.
  2. An ultrasound verifies that you have a normal pregnancy developing in the uterus versus an ectopic pregnancy, which is a potentially dangerous condition. Having an abortion, unaware of an ectopic pregnancy will be ineffective and could possibly even incur life threatening results.
  3. An ultrasound allows you to actually see the developing baby, if you choose to. Abortion is an irreversible decision and should not be made quickly or without an awareness of what is really happening with your body. This is vital information that helps you to have all the facts.
